Principals Message

 May, 2012

Greetings Hillcrest Parents!

As you know we have recently begun a new morning routine process in the place of having students report to the playground. This routine consists of having students attend different places throughout the building where they are able to participate in structured activities such as walking with music in the gym, educational computer games, board games, coloring or other activities. Students are also able to report to the library and read silently or to get some homework completed. This has been a very positive change for us and has drastically reduced morning behavior and discipline issues as well as students reporting to the nurse’s office with scrapes and/or bruises from the playground equipment.  Two concerns were noted I would like to mention and ask for your help in providing a solution. The first is that we have had a significant reduction in the number of students in the cafeteria eating breakfast because they would rather spend their time in one of the other activities. If your son/daughter does not eat breakfast and normally eats breakfast here at school please encourage them to continue doing so. Secondly there has been an increase in the number of students reporting to school well before 8:00 am and waiting in the front lobby. The school does not provide supervision until 8:00 am and therefore cannot be available to monitor them until that time. Please make sure you do not send your children to school or drop them off unless their arrival time is 8:00 am or after. Your cooperation in this would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

Starting the second week of May Hillcrest will be administering our third round of universal assessments for all students. These assessments cover a wide array of content and are used as a screener to identify students with academic struggles.

PTA News

The PTA is collecting boxtops, Swiss Valley milk caps, and Campbell’s soup labels. If you send any of these items in with your student, the school makes money! The class with the most contributions wins a pizza party.

Note: Make sure the boxtops are not expired, and preclip them, please. Also: Make sure the soup label is clipped with the UPC on the back of the label.
