Principals Message

Greetings Hillcrest Parents!
January 19,2012

As you all know Hillcrest School has implemented a school wide positive behavior program. So far this year it has been going very well and the student behavior has improved tremendously in all areas as compared to last year. Part of this program is to focus on the positive behaviors so many of our students exhibit everyday, and to build in regular fun activities or incentives to show them good things come to those who make good choices. You may remember back in the early fall we started off with “Lunch on the Lawn”.   The intent was to have students bring a “picnic” blanket or beach towel to sit on while we all go outside and have lunch in the lawn together. The weather was not nice to us that day, and we moved the activity into the gymnasium and played some oldie dance tunes on our new sound system. The kids had a ball, as did the teachers!   Just prior to the winter break we had our second school-wide incentive which was the “Karaoke Dance Party”. We really tried to get Mr. O’Neill to take charge of the mic and sing us an old AC/DC tune but he chickened out at the last minute. J Our next school wide incentive is “Movie Mania” and scheduled for March 16
th. Each teacher will advertise and host a “movie room” for the afternoon and students who earn enough Bit-O-Honey tickets will be able to sign up for a movie of their choice. This has really been a wonderful program for us at Hillcrest, and has certainly been “for the good of our hive”.

Recently we had an excellent opportunity to have a few staff members from Dupage Community Hospital here to provide a very entertaining and informative presentation on the importance of brain safety and wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle and doing other activities. Through a grant this group was able to provide this valuable information to our students, and also provide every first grade student with a free bicycle safety helmet!   From what I understand this grant will continue to be funded, so I will be making every effort to get them back next school year!

You should be receiving some information within the next couple weeks regarding a series of “Home-School Connection” parent workshops. The dates will be Feb 15th, 22nd and 29th and the times will be from 5pm – 8pm here in the Hillcrest library. Each week sessions will include an array of valuable information on school testing, educational acronyms, student health issues, child internet safety, using humor with discipline and resources available through local agencies such as the Robert Young Center and the Youth Service Bureau.   Translators (Spanish), a snack and childcare will be available each of the 3 nights and our hope is continue building a home-school teamwork approach to providing the best and safest education for your children. Please keep an eye out for further information coming soon!

Thank you, and as always please don’t hesitate to call or email if you have questions regarding your child’s education here at Hillcrest Elementary.

PTA News

The PTA is collecting boxtops, Swiss Valley milk caps, and Campbell’s soup labels. If you send any of these items in with your student, the school makes money! The class with the most contributions wins a pizza party.

Note: Make sure the boxtops are not expired, and preclip them, please. Also: Make sure the soup label is clipped with the UPC on the back of the label.
