Principals Message

Dear Parents:

It doesn’t seem possible that we are moving into the month of March! Our second, third, and fourth grade students recently completed their MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) assessments in reading and math. We are excited about the progress that they are making in these core subject areas. We look forward to continuing to see progress when our students take this assessment later this spring.

Speaking of assessments, our third and fourth graders will be taking the ISAT (Illinois Standard Achievement Test) during the week of March 1-5. This high-stakes state assessment is given to all third and fourth grade students throughout the state of Illinois. We generally do not receive the results of these assessments until early June. There will be a letter sent home later this week that will inform all parents about how you can assist in preparing your children for this assessment. As always, we look forward to having our boys and girls do their personal best!

As we address our School-wide Title I Plan this year, we continue to focus on parent involvement within our school.   A number of parents have signed up to attend our “Wake Up With Waffles” breakfast later this week. We also greatly appreciate your input on the parent survey that you recently completed for us. The surveys are once again quite positive. The results of the survey are currently in the process of being tabulated. They will be available on our school website within two weeks. Thanks again for your feedback!

Our PTA continues to work hard for our school. They will be hosting a Movie Night on Friday, March 12. There will be a flyer going home next week regarding the specifics of this evening. Speaking of PTA, please note that there will be an important PTA Meeting on Thursday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. We hope you can attend!

Jump Rope For Heart was once again a success at our school. We thank you for your support of this program. All students participated in their gym classes with Mr. O’Neill during the week. We particularly want to recognize Mrs. Ickes for all of her assistance in organizing the program this year. Speaking of healthy hearts, our healthy Valentine Day parties were a great success as students enjoyed eating fresh fruits and vegetables. We thank all of you who contributed these healthy snacks. Our kids loved them!

Please take a close look at our March calendar. Note that our spring break is during the week of March 22-26. Hopefully it truly will be a spring break for our boys and girls.

Thanks again for your continued support!

Mr. Jim O’Brien

PTA News

The PTA is collecting boxtops, Swiss Valley milk caps, and Campbell’s soup labels. If you send any of these items in with your student, the school makes money! The class with the most contributions wins a pizza party.

Note: Make sure the boxtops are not expired, and preclip them, please. Also: Make sure the soup label is clipped with the UPC on the back of the label.

As part of the development of Hillcrest's School Improvement Plan, our school adopted these Mission and Vision Statements in May of 2009.
